Burnout fabrics feature a transparent ground with an opaque, often textured pattern. Take burnout velvet fabric, a lightweight blend with a translucent floral pattern on the surface. Burning cloth is generally made of polyester filament yarn wrapped with colored cotton fiber core yarn, woven into the fabric, and then printed with acid pulp. After drying and cooking, the printed cotton fiber is hydrolyzed and rotten, and after washing, it shows a translucent flower shape with only polyester. Burnt fabric, also known as embossed fabric, is a new type of fabric. The main feature of the fabric is that it has a transparent, concave-convex pattern. The burnt part resembles a screen, and the embossed part resembles a flannel. Therefore, it has a novel flower pattern, which is light and transparent, with a prominent pattern, clear outline, and smooth hand.
The name comes from the traditional technique of creating the velvet-on-velvet variety, a blended textile in which the base fabric is a different fiber type than the pile. A mild acid solution that dissolves rayon is applied to silk/rayon blend velvet, burning off selected areas and leaving a velvet pattern on the silk chiffon. This chemically made fabric is also called devoré, which means "devoured" in French because the velvet down is eroded away by the chemicals applied. This fabric type is sometimes referred to as wedding ring velvet because, despite the texture of velvet, the width of the fine fabric can fit through a wedding ring. It gives garments a luxurious feel and prints in color and size.
Burnout today also refers to a wider group of textiles with similar opaque and/or textured patterns finished effects on the transparent ground. The pattern of the burnt jacquard fabric comes from the weaving of coarse fibers into a transparent background fabric. These fabrics may come from different fibers such as cotton, linen, wire, silk, and various other combinations because there is no chemical process used to make textiles.
Burnt-out fabrics can be delicate and require special care and sewing to realize the fabric's potential and ensure the garment's durability. These textiles are suitable for loose styles where the fabric can move and flow. Consider strategic linings or matching underwear to enhance sheer areas of fabric in tops, trousers, and skirts; tank tops or suspender dresses; and dresses with drapes.
